Q2: Indentured Servant vs. Slave

Describe life as an indentured servant.  How is it similar and different from life as a slave?  Use details from the novel.

  1. Life as an indentured servant was being sold to someone because you owed something or you committed a small crime. An indentured servant is similar to life as a slave because you are still sold to someone and you have to live apart from the actual family or owner. It is different because you had some hope that you would be free one day while slaves had none. Also, you were treated a little better than the slaves were.

  2. For a slave you are sold off to an owner for life until you die, they give you freedom, you get sold to another owner or you escape. An indentured servant has to serve the master for a certain amount of time, most commonly 7 years, but the person in the book Polly, has to pay her's and her parents leading up to 14 years. Slaves work in the fields and hard labor, some indentured servants may work in the fields, but typically work in the big house, because of the fact that they are white.

  3. Indentured servants were people who agreed to work for someone without getting paid although they did get to set how long they worked for. It is similar because both slaves and indentured servants worked without getting paid. They are different because indentured servants were still considered free men and they willingly worked without pay. Indentured servants would agree to work without pay so they could come to America.

  4. An indentured servant works off their families debt. They don't get whipped and it can be anyone who owes money. They are ordinary people from Europe. Its similar to being a slave, because even though you don't get treated as bad a slave you are still treated bad. You don't get to do things like the others. You have to work and don't get payed for it. They also have to sit in the back of the truck. Its different from being a slave because you get regular clothes and are treated better then slaves. Indentured servants don't get beat and their work isn't as rough as a slave. They are still rude and think of themselves above some others. Its just a better place to be then a slave.

  5. The difference between a slave and an indentured servant is that a slave worked for free, while an indentured servant had their debts payed off. The similarity is that they both had to do what they were told to do.

  6. Life as an indentured servent can be better or worse than a slave's. It's similar because they both work for a master in their house for example, when Polly and the slave both live in ahouse on Mr.Derby's land. It's different because an indentured servent works to pay off a dept or to earn freedom or both one example is that Polly said in the novel how she has to work for fourteen years to pay off her parents dept and to earn her freedom.

  7. As an indentured servant, you are working to pay off debt you or your family owe. Whereas slaves are sold for life. The work they both do is similar but typically slaves are given the least pleasant of jobs and are blamed if anything goes wrong. They are both owned by someone and are given work to do from the owner of them. They both don't get paid or have a choice in what they do. Indentured servants usually have to work for someone for 7 year terms. Being an indentured servant isn't that much better than being a slave, but at least at the end, they'll have freedom.

  8. Life as an indentured servant is like being a slave, but you will eventually get your freedom. An indentured servant is when you owe someone money and then you work to pay the debt off.Being an indentured servant is similar to being a slave because you are working for someone for so many years. Being an indentured servant is different from being a slave because eventually, once you pay off your debt your free, unlike a slave who will work for their owner till the day the die.

  9. When you are working as an indentured servant, you are working off a debt that you or your family owes. While a slaves works for the rest of their life. The difference between an indentured servant and a slave is that an indentured servant is still a free person, while a slave may never be free again.

  10. An indentured servant is someone who works for you because they have, or there family has a debt that needs to be paid off. The difference between a slave and an indentured servant is that once you have worked long enough to pay off your debt, you can be free. While if your a slave you must work until you are either dead or sold to maybe a nicer owner.

  11. As an indentured servant, you have to work for an owner to pay off dept. It is similar to being a slave because they both have to do the owners work for them, and you are treated poorly. It is also different from being a slave because slaves have to work for an owner for life, but indentured servants only have to work for a certain period of time.

  12. Life of a indentured servant is the same as one as a slave because both a slave and an indentured servant have to work for their owners and do what most common people would never plan to do in their lifetime. They are different, though, because a slave works until the day they or the slave owner dies, an indentured servant, however, works for 4-7 years before their released into the world.

  13. The life of an indentured servant is easier because the work 4-7 years to pay off a debt while slaves work the rest of their life with very little to no chance of escaping.

  14. Life as an indentured servant is good compared to the slaves, although it is very similar. Polly (as an indentured servant) will be free one day and she will eventually make a little money unlike the slaves. Her work is also different because she doesn't have to work in the fields, like Cato said. But it's also similar because for now she has to act like a slave, lives in the same conditions as the slaves and is treated like a slave. Polly also have some of the same jobs as the slaves.

  15. An indentured servant is someone who works for you because they have or someone in their family has to pay off a debt. A slave is someone who works for you until you want to let her/him go to someone else than you or she/he works until she/he is dead.

  16. Indentured servants and slaves have some similarities, but they have more differences. Indentured servants get put to work for 4-7 years. People buy their indentures and then they have the right to put them to work. In Copper Sun, we meet Polly, an indentured servants who's indenture is bought by Mr. Derby. She is forced to teach Amari the English language and how to live in an American home. Slaves are bought at a slave sale and are given to the highest bidder. They are then immediately put to work and expected to learn the English language. They can be beaten and under fed if they do not follow their masters rules.

  17. An Indentured servant is someone who is working to pay off a family debt. An Indentured servant is similar to a slave because they both have an owner that they get orders from, and they have both half to work very hard. Also they both don't get paid for their work. Polly is forced to do the slaves jobs even though she doesn't want to. They are different because an indentured servant works until they pay their debt, and then they will be free. Polly will be free when she is 30 years old. A slave works for life and will never be free. Amari will not be free again. Indentured servants don't have as bad of jobs as the slaves do. For example the slaves have to pick rice all day. And soon Polly might be working in the house.

  18. Indentured Servants and slaves are similar because both are bought. Though they are different because slaves are most likely never going to achieve freedom, whereas Indentured Servants are free after about 4-7 years. In Copper Sun, Polly is the servant and Amari is the slave. Polly is required to serve 14 years of service to Mr. Derby but Amari's freedom is not definite. Amari is seen as an object in the book, whereas Polly is treated with slight more respect, but not much.

  19. An indentured servant and a slave have differences and similarities. An indentured servant does everything the master wants for 4-7 years, and is forced to teach the slaves English and how to act. The slaves do everything the master wants and has pretty much no hope at all. the slaves could be starved, whipped, or beaten.

  20. An indentures servant does work for a period of time until there debt is paid off but a slave works their entire life and they get starved, worked to death, whipped but indentured servants don't really get punished unless being sold again.

  21. Life as an indentured servant isn't as rough as the life that a slave would experience. The responsibilities that an indentured servant might have would be cooking food and doing housekeeping. Whereas a slave would work outside typically in the fields growing and harvesting cash crops. The punishments are different. Slaves were beaten or killed and an indentured servant might just get whipped. They can both gain freedom, but it is harder for the slaves. They both work for the same owner and may live in the same quarters.

  22. An indentured servant is someone who needs to pay off debt for up to 4-7 years, in Polly's case 14 years. It is similar to being a slave because they are both purchased. The difference in being an indentured servant and being a slave is that an indentured servant owes something and will be free after their time is done. A slave does not owe anything and will be free if he/she can buy their freedom.

  23. Life as an indentured servant was almost equal to the life of a slave. You did what your contract holder told you to do or you went to debtors prison. They may have a better chance at getting a job in the big house because they are white. They also had a better chance of not being whipped when they did something wrong. Some of the indentured servants even kept track of slaves and were supposed to bring them back if they ran away. Another advantage of being an indentured servant was you were less likely to have to work in the fields. The final advantage of being an indentured servant is that you eventually are able to pay off your contract. In Polly's case in the book it would take 14 years because she had to pay for both of her parents contracts to the New World.

  24. An indentured servant is someone who works to pay off their debt or someone else's debt which normally takes 4-7 years but for Polly its 14 years. A slave is someone who is purchased by someone and is not payed for their services such as Amari, Teenie and Tidbit.

  25. Life as a servant wasn't too much better other than that you could be free at the end of the indenture. As an indenture you have to do what your master tells you and he could sell your indenture to someone else. Although some indentured servants could work at the master's house. Or you could work with the slaves. An indenture is seven years of service. Polly had fourteen years to make up for both her dead parents.

  26. Indentured servants were almost equal to slaves. Both slaves and indentured servants had to follow the rules of their owner. Although, because they are white, indentured servants got better jobs sometimes such as working in the big house directly for their master. Also indentured servants get payed and are set free after a small number of years. Slaves however are beaten, not payed, live under horrible circumstances and are never set free.

  27. A indentured servant work for 7-8 years but if their parents died as a indentured servant then the kid was too do their time to. But a slave work for their life.

  28. An indentured servant worked to pay off a debt. It didn't matter if it wasn't their own debt. For example, Polly had to work 14 years as an indentured servant, because both of her parents owed Mr. Derby a debt. A slave, however, had to work an entire lifetime with no payment or freedom (unless given by their master). Amari was Clay's birthday present slave. She was to work for the Derby family for life.

  29. An indentured servant worked for their owners until their debt or sentence was complete. Slaves however, worked until they either died, or bought their freedom from their owners. But they were both treated as common cattle.

    ReplyDelete
  30. As an indentured servant, punishments were less severe because they still kind of had rights. In Polly's case, it wasn't too different but with some, indentured servants are treated well and given jobs in the main house.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Indentured servants and slaves have their similarities and differences. Indentured servants and slaves are both bought. They both can be treated as badly as their master decides to treat them. However, slaves must serve for a lifetime. An indentured servant only has to serve however long their indenture says that they have to serve. Most of the time it is a period of 4-7 years of service, so they do have a chance to be free unlike a slave.

  32. An indentured servant is someone who is payed for to travel to the new world but have to pay off the dept as a slave is someone who is captured and sold to a master

    ReplyDelete
  33. The difference between the two is that a slave has no way to gain there freedom unless they run away. And the indentured servant only has to work until their payment is complete then they are free. The similaritys are they they both have to do what there master (owner) tells them to do with no argument.

  34. An indentured servant's life is much like a slave's life, they are forced to work off their dept by working as a slaves for a sentence for however many years until they work off their dept. Their life is much like a slaves because they are treated poorly and are put through the same grueling tasks. For example Polly is an indentured servant and she has to serve 14 years because of her parents passed down dept and she is working along side Amari in the kitchen getting the same treatment as everyone else.

  35. An indentured servant can pay off their work and be free. Where as a slave will not be free. An indentured normally works inside the big house. Where as a slave works in the farm land.

  36. An indentured servant is someone who works 4-7 years until they can be free. But in the book Polly has to work for 14 years to pay off her family debt. They basicallly do the same thing that slaves do until their time is up. And slaves can never be free like the indentured servants.

  37. An indentured servant can pay off their work and be free and they only work up to 4-7 years. A slave is a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The difference is massive. A indentured servant works for 4-7 years until they pay off their debt. A slave works most likely for life. Also a servant most likely is treated slightly better than a slave.

    ReplyDelete
  39. An indentured servant and slaves are different because slaves must work until they can buy there freedom, indentured servants only work for 4-7 years to pay off their debt. They are similar by the fact that they aren't treated very well and still have to work in some terrible conditions depending on the sititation.

  40. An indentured servant actually has a chance to live the rest of their life after they server out their indenture while a slave has no choice but to live out the rest of their life. However an indentured servant and a slave may have the same job such as tending to the rice fields.

    ReplyDelete
  41. As an indentured servant you have to work off a debt you owe to someone by working for them for a certain amount of time. As a slave you are sold to someone who then owns you and will most likely live out the rest of your life under the ownership of someone else.

  42. An indentured servant is someone who has to pay a debt or may have committed a crime, where they work long enough to pay the debt or that sentence. On the other hand a slave is a slave their entire life. The similarities of an indentured servant and a slave is that they both have to work in the fields and do what their owner says.
