Q1: Cape Coast Prison

In your own words, describe the horrors of Cape Coast Prison. How does Amari survive her time at the prison?

  1. The horrors at Cape Coast Prison were the uncertainty of what was about to happen to the slaves, the little food the men gave them, the filth and the horrific smell. Amari survives by having a woman that helped her by telling her what was about to happen and helping her get some of the little food and make her time there more bearable by showing compassion.

  2. The cape coast prison is a bad and unhealthy environment. It is dangerous because of the soldiers, the atmosphere, and all the prisoners. Amari survives because Afi helps her through everything. Afi makes sure Amari has protection, food and water, and she teaches Amari how to not be chosen by the soldiers.

  3. The horrors of cape coast prison was that the slaves were thrown in a room; and barely given food or water. Amari only survived this prison because of a woman name Afi, who shared her food and stories with amari. Afi also taught Amari how to act.

  4. The horrors of cape coast prison are that its a prison and it very unsanitary and you have a good chance of becoming sick and dying. Amari survives because she meets Afi and she teaches her to work out and stay strong.

  5. Cape Coast Prison is essentially a life in seclusion with some people made more sympathetic and some more ravenous and self-absorbed and less civilized seeming from life as a slave where starvation and thirst are likely ways to die and if not for Afi's help in teaching Amari how to look and act unattractive when guards walk by there would be things happening that I probably wouldn't want to describe on a website for school or anywhere for that matter.

  6. Cape Coast prison was a place along the coast of Africa where the slaves were taken before they were shipped to America. All of the slaves there had not bathed in days or even weeks or maybe even longer. The slaves were whipped and beaten if they did not follow the directions that they were given. Amari was able to get through all of that with the help of Afi. Afi told her what was happening and she told her how to get through it. After a while when they were finally sold Amari was worried about what was going to happen and Afi was able to help her to understand what was happening.

  9. The Cape Coast Prison is a horrible place where Amari and the other slaves are kept in a very small room with only a small window type opening for air ventilation and it smells repulsive and they are given tiny scraps of food or no food at all. Amari survives this place with the help of Afi, Afi is sort of like a mother figure to Amari and she makes sure Amari is getting food and is geing taken care of as much as possible.

  10. Amari's time at Cape Coast Prison is horrible because she is chained up and thrown into a small dark cell with random people she doesn't know. She receives little food and little water to survive, but she does survive because someone sees Amari receive no food after bread pieces are thrown into the cell randomly. That someone, Afi, Amari's new best friend, gets a bread piece and splits it with Amari and then they talk about how awful it is too live there and how to survive this time because Afi had already been bought and had been sold back. The only reason I think Amari survive was because of the help of her new best friend Afi and all of her experience and help.

  11. In the Cape Cod Prison, Amari experiences the worst. She finds herself in a dark cell with dozens of other African women. Her captors beat her, barely feed her and she almost dies from thirst and starvation. She was treated like a slave already.

  13. They didn't get a lot of food and when they did they had to fight for it. Also they only got a bucket of water to clean themselves with, they didn't have a lot of clothes, and there was no light in the prison. Amari survived by befriending a woman named Afi who helped Amari.

  14. Some horrors are that they just dropped food into the cell and then people just fighting over it. Another horror is that they didn't actually bathe, they just dumped water on them. Amari survives with the help of Afi who protects her and acts like a role model to Amari.

  15. At the Cape Cod prison, all the African women were thrown into a cell that was almost pitch black. When small rations of bread were thrown into the cell, almost all the women pushed and clawed their way through to get some. There wasn't hardly any water given to them in the cell. Amari was left with nothing and no one until a women named Afi came to her assistance. She gave her some of her food and told her advice on how to survive from her own experiences and stories she had heard. She mothers Amari and leads her to survival.

  20. The Cape Coast prison is a place that the slaves are taken to. They get very small portions of food and water, just enough to keep them from starving. The prison guards can rape the prisoners, whip the prisoners, and almost anything they want. Amari survives because Afi helps her to look like she is injured, or dumb, or just a child, and they eventually survive the prison together.

Afi cares for her as a mother does her child, due to the fact that she lost her own daughter. Afi was the only thing keeping Amari alive and she probably wouldn't have made it without her.

  27. At the Cape coast prison the living conditions were horrible. The women were trapped in small dark cells, while the men were all on small cramped shelves were they had no choice but to defecate and urinate on themselves. They had been starved, raped, beaten and kept in confinement. They rarely got to see the light of day and when they did, they were chained to the ship. Afi was also a prisoner on the ship, she was Amari's savior. Whenever the captors decided to give them minimal food and water, Afi would share it with Amari because she was to scared to go after it herself. Afi is Amari's protection from the other women aboard the ship traveling far far away from home.

  28. Cape Coast Prison was a horrid place. The soon-to-be slaves got a rude awakening when they entered. They were branded with a number and were sometimes stripped of their clothes. They were thrown into tight living quarters that were not sanitary and were stained with blood. Amari learned to move on and not let her time here define her life. She gained strength and confidence from a new friend, Afi. Amari knew that she had to keep going.

  29. At the Cape Coast prison, the slaves had to spend most of their time in tiny, dim, unsanitary cells. They slept in their own blood and vomit, as well as starved themselves. The prisoners rarely saw sunlight. Amari survived by the help of another prisoner named Afi, who protected her and gave her advice. Without Afi, Amari would've been dead before the ship landed.
